Science Fiction Double Feature: Trans Liberation on Twin Earth
What is it to be a woman? What is it to be a man? We start by laying out desiderata for an analysis of 'woman' and 'man': descriptively, it should link these gender categories to sex biology without reducing them to sex biology, and politically, it should help us explain and combat traditional sexism while also allowing us to make sense of the activist view that gendering should be consensual. Using a Putnam-style 'Twin Earth' example, we argue that none of the existing analyses in the feminist literature succeeds in meeting all of our desiderata. Finally, we propose a positive account that we believe can satisfy all the desiderata outlined. According to our theory, the genders 'woman' and 'man' are individuated not by their contemporary connections to sex biology, but by their historical continuity with classes that were originally closely connected to sex biology
Determining the Nature of Late Gunn-Peterson Troughs with Galaxy Surveys
Recent observations have discovered long (up to ~110 Mpc/h), opaque
Gunn-Peterson troughs in the z ~ 5.5 Lyman-alpha forest, which are challenging
to explain with conventional models of the post-reionization intergalactic
medium. Here we demonstrate that observations of the galaxy populations in the
vicinity of the deepest troughs can distinguish two competing models for these
features: deep voids where the ionizing background is weak due to fluctuations
in the mean free path of ionizing photons would show a deficit of galaxies,
while residual temperature variations from extended, inhomogeneous reionization
would show an overdensity of galaxies. We use large (~550 Mpc/h) semi-numerical
simulations of these competing explanations to predict the galaxy populations
in the largest of the known troughs at z ~ 5.7. We quantify the strong
correlation of Lyman-alpha effective optical depth and galaxy surface density
in both models and estimate the degree to which realistic surveys can measure
such a correlation. While a spectroscopic galaxy survey is ideal, we also show
that a relatively inexpensive narrowband survey of Lyman-alpha-emitting

Alternatives to standard puncture initial data for binary black hole evolution
Standard puncture initial data have been widely used for numerical binary
black hole evolutions despite their shortcomings, most notably the inherent
lack of gravitational radiation at the initial time that is later followed by a
burst of spurious radiation. We study the evolution of three alternative
initial data schemes. Two of the three alternatives are based on post-Newtonian
expansions that contain realistic gravitational waves. The first scheme is
based on a second-order post-Newtonian expansion in Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner
transverse-traceless (ADMTT) gauge that has been resummed to approach standard
puncture data at the black holes. The second scheme is based on asymptotic
matching of the 4-metrics of two tidally perturbed Schwarzschild solutions to a
first-order post-Newtonian expansion in ADMTT gauge away from the black holes.
The final alternative is obtained through asymptotic matching of the 4-metrics
of two tidally perturbed Schwarzschild solutions to a second-order
post-Newtonian expansion in harmonic gauge away from the black holes. When
evolved, the second scheme fails to produce quasicircular orbits (and instead
leads to a nearly head-on collision). This failure can be traced back to
inaccuracies in the extrinsic curvature due to low order matching. More
encouraging is that the latter two alternatives lead to quasicircular orbits
and show gravitational radiation from the onset of the evolution, as well as a
reduction of spurious radiation. Current deficiencies compared to standard
punctures data include more eccentric trajectories during the inspiral and
larger constraint violations, since the alternative data sets are only
approximate solutions of Einstein's equations. The eccentricity problem can be

Elemental Abundances in NGC 3516
We present RGS data from an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy
NGC 3516, taken while the continuum source was in an extreme low state. The
spectrum shows numerous emission lines including the H-like lines of C, N and O
and the He-like lines of N, O and Ne. These data show that the N lines are far
stronger than would be expected from gas of solar abundances. Based on our
photoionization models, we find that N is overabundant compared to C, O and Ne
by at least a factor of 2.5. We suggest this is the result of secondary
production of N in intermediate mass stars, and indicative of the history of

What even is 'gender'?
This paper presents a new taxonomy of sex/gender concepts based on the idea of starting with a few basic components of the sex/gender system, and exhausting the possible types of simple associations and identities based on these. The resulting system is significantly more fine-grained than most competitors, and helps to clarify a number of points of confusion and conceptual tension in academic and activist conversations about feminism, transgender politics, and the social analysis of gender
Cancer cell lines show high heritability for motility but not generation time
Tumour evolution depends on heritable differences between cells in traits affecting cell survival or replication. It is well established that cancer cells are genetically and phenotypically heterogeneous; however, the extent to which this phenotypic variation is heritable is far less well explored. Here, we estimate the broad-sense heritability (H2) of two cell traits related to cancer hallmarks––cell motility and generation time––within populations of four cancer cell lines in vitro and find that motility is strongly heritable. This heritability is stable across multiple cell generations, with heritability values at the high end of those measured for a range of traits in natural populations of animals or plants. These findings confirm a central assumption of cancer evolution, provide a first quantification of the evolvability of key traits in cancer cells and indicate that there is ample raw material for experimental evolution in cancer cell lines. Generation time, a trait directly affecting cell fitness, shows substantially lower values of heritability than cell speed, consistent with its having been under directional selection removing heritable variation
Striking Photospheric Abundance Anomalies in Blue Horizontal-Branch Stars in Globular Cluster M13
High-resolution optical spectra of thirteen blue horizontal-branch (BHB)
stars in the globular cluster M13 show enormous deviations in element
abundances from the expected cluster metallicity. In the hotter stars (T_eff >
12000 K), helium is depleted by factors of 10 to 100 below solar, while iron is
enhanced to three times the solar abundance, two orders of magnitude above the
canonical metallicity [Fe/H] ~= -1.5 dex for this globular cluster. Nitrogen,
phosphorus, and chromium exhibit even more pronounced enhancements, and other
metals are also mildly overabundant, with the exception of magnesium, which
stays very near the expected cluster metallicity. These photospheric anomalies
are most likely due to diffusion --- gravitational settling of helium, and
radiative levitation of the other elements --- in the stable radiative
atmospheres of these hot stars. The effects of these mechanisms may have some
impact on the photometric morphology of the cluster's horizontal branch and on
